“Open your eyes, look within.  Are you satisfied with the life you are living?” Bob Marley

If anyone is like me, setting a New Years resolution is a waste of time as my well intentioned goals quickly become lost in the hustle and bustle of work and life.  Commencing a new year, I thought it would be worthwhile to reflect on my values and determine if I am living my life according to the qualities I want, to help identify where improvements and changes could be made.

Values are the qualities that you either possess at your core or that you desire to work towards obtaining.  Values and qualities can be thought of as a compass to help guide the choices and decisions you make in work, relationships, business, play, parenting, and education.  Living your life according to that compass can assist you in becoming more comfortable, happy and content with who you are as a person.

Some examples of values are, but by no means limited to, qualities like being adventurous, compassionate, creative, loving, humorous, supportive and respectful. Setting actions based on the values you want to be remembered for and working towards achieving these will take you closer to the life you are looking for.

Value based actions are explored through Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.  Talking to a psychologist who specialises in ACT may be helpful to explore what your values are, helping to take you closer to living the kind of life you want.
