At Brisbane Counselling Centre we have registered psychologists who are available to provide counselling via Zoom video link or phone. The appointments for online or phone counselling sessions work in much the same way as face-to-face counselling. The appointments are booked ahead of time and are similar to a typical in-person consultation.
What are E-Counselling and Telehealth?
Online counselling, sometimes known as telehealth or e-counselling is a relatively new but developing approach to providing Psychological Counselling services to those seeking support but who may be struggling to attend a conventional appointment. One of the many benefits of modern technology is that it’s quite possible for almost anyone to access the expertise of a psychologist online via apps such as Zoom Pro. Shortly before your appointment time, simply click the meeting link we send you, and it will open in any web browser, or via the zoom app on your smart phone. Then use the unique password we provide to connect to your psychologist. This type of service can offer individuals the same level of support and confidentiality that face-to-face consultations do whilst offering an alternative option for people who find it challenging to attend a traditional appointment.
Why Choose Online or Phone Counselling?
There are a number of reasons why you may decide to choose to do your counselling over the phone or internet. COVID-19 of course, especially during lockdowns, quarantine, or self-isolation, necessitates this type of counselling, and, for those who may just lead busy lives, it provides a much more practical way of seeking help without pulling you away from your personal or professional responsibilities. It may even just be a personal preference. No matter what the reason is for your decision, you can expect the same level of care.
What about Private Health or Medicare Rebates for E-Counselling and Phone Sessions?
If you have private health insurance covering psychology we can email you a receipt for online or in-shop claiming upon payment for the service (usually done by credit card over the phone).
To claim Medicare rebates you must have a Mental Health Treatment Plan (and referral) from a GP or psychiatrist. Medicare rebates have been available for some time now for people undergoing e-counselling who live in rural or remote areas. Please ask our friendly receptionists whether this applies to you or go online with the Medicare telehealth Locator (zones 4-7 are eligible for rebates).
This is perfect for those who live in an area that would usually have prevented them from seeking professional help.
Additionally, in more recent COVID-19 affected times, Medicare has approved telehealth (including phone and e-counselling) for ALL valid Mental Health Treatment Plan referrals (allowing up to 10 rebates per calendar year). Furthermore, an additional 10 rebates per calendar year are available until December 2022 if you feel your mental health has been particularly affected by COVID-19.
Who Does Online Counselling Suit?
Online counselling services mean that you can receive high quality support from the comfort of your own home, or wherever it is convenient for you. As long as you have a phone or computer you can try online counselling. This may be particularly beneficial for people who are:
- housebound due to medical, psychological or personal reasons;
- working shift or daytime hours so can’t attend many regular Psychology appointment times;
- parents who are busy looking after children at home;
- living in remote areas and can’t access regular quality Psychology services where they live;
- living overseas and want to access a psychologist from their home country;
- suffering from anxiety issues that make it difficult for them to leave the house or attend appointments in person;
- worried about anonymity and would prefer not to venture outside their home to obtain support;
- just want the convenience of being able to have sessions in their own environment.
