What is positive psychology?
Based on the ground-breaking work of Martin Seligman in the early 2000’s, evidence-based ‘Positive Psychology Interventions’ (PPI) aim to provide effective and long-term increases in positive feelings, thoughts, and behaviours- even in the absence of obvious psychological disorders. Psychologists who use this treatment modality are ready and able to support you through a variety of challenges you may be facing. Therapy is a process, but by breaking down the issues to understand them better, identifying solutions, and putting in the work (eg plans, exercises, routines, and monitoring measures) with someone to support and guide you the entire way, you will find these challenges lessen over time.
There are a range of challenges practitioners can offer assistance with- for example, if you require support with personal development then psychologists practising Positive Psychology may be a great fit for you.
In short, Positive Psychology looks at what makes life worth living, focussing on identifying and utilising your inner-strength to achieve positive experiences and mental states. A positive experience for example could be an event that results in happiness or love, and positive states could include gratitude, kindness, empathy, strength, resilience, and optimism. Thus Positive Psychology can help reframe your experiences and keep the focus on celebrating the wins as you overcome your challenges, as opposed to only dwelling on the setbacks.
